My First Knit Sweater
Are you a serial scarf-knitter? Interested in tackling a bigger project with some shaping? Try a simple top-down sweater!
We will be learning to make a top-down seamless sweater (no sewing it all together at the end!). You'll have two weeks between classes to finish your yoke, the second class will get you knitting the body, and lesson three is for sleeves. The first class is two hours to get everyone started, and the second and third classes are 90mins.
We have created a pattern just for you, with sizes from baby to adult XXXL so you can make a sweater for yourself, or a little one just to get the hang of it. Pattern will be provided at the first class.
Sizes: 0-6mos (6-12mos, 12-18mos, 18mos-2yrs, 2-3yrs, 4-6yrs, 7-10yrs) {xs, s, m, l, xl, xxl, xxxl}
Finished chest: 18” (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30) {32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56}
Part of the discussion in the first class will be choosing your size, so purchase yarn based on the the approximate size you're considering, and we can adjust after the first class.
Yarn & Tools:
Choose from: Kraemer Perfection Chunky, Malabrigo Mecha, Laines Du Nord Firenze, Plymouth Aireado, or any yarn that will give you the correct gauge.
Approximate yardage: 210 (270, 330, 400, 450, 500, 550) {600, 700, 800, 950, 1150, 1200, 1400}
Needles: for main body - US10/6mm circular needles, 16” only for up to 18mos, 16” & 24” 2-10yrs, 16” & 32” adult xs-m, 20” & 40” adult l-xxxl.
For ribbing - US8/5mm circular needles, 16” only for up to 18mos, 16” & 24” 2-10yrs, 16” & 32” adult xs-m, 20” & 40” adult l-xxxl.
8” long DPN’s in size US8/5mm & US10/6mm - see Note below
OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE. It’s very important to knit a gauge swatch to make sure your knitting gauge matches the pattern gauge. Otherwise your sweater won’t fit!
To get the most out of the class, please complete your stockinette gauge swatch on the US 10 needles beforehand and come in to the shop to have Lisa, Reena or Danielle check it for you. If you come on a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday you'll for sure find one of them here.
To knit a gauge swatch: cast on 24 stitches, knit in stockinette (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 4”. Measure 2” sections in several places. You should have 7 stitches in the 2” sections. Bring your swatch into the shop or to the first class for help checking it.
Other accessories needed: 4 stitch markers, one should be different than the other three.
Darning needle
Note – interchangeable circular needles are your best bet – then you can change cord lengths as you need to.
Next note – the DPN’s are for the sleeves; you can also knit the sleeves on the circulars using the magic loop method, or with a short circular for the child and adult sizes.
For help with any of this, stop by the shop or attend one of our clinics before the class.
