Firecracker Quilt
In this 2 part class we'll be making the Firecracker Quilt from the book, New Ways with Jelly Rolls. It all starts with a jelly roll and an equilateral triangle ruler, and it's easy sewing from there.
This project is perfect for the Experienced Beginner/Intermediate Quilter who wants something new to try. It's so fun to sew equilateral triangles and it's way easier than it looks! The student must be able to sew a consistent 1/4" seam and is confident in cutting accurately.
In the first class, we'll discuss contrasting fabrics and match up the strips. Then, we'll sew some and cut some so the student is confident in the process of creating the blocks before the second class.
In the second class, we'll sew the blocks together with lots of tips and tricks for keeping everything aligned.
The finished quilt is 43"x52", but I will show you how to use the leftovers to make it larger, if you wish. You have the option to use the scraps to make the backing fabric as described in the book.
Materials needed:
- Book- New Ways with Jelly Rolls (12 Reversible Modern Jelly Roll Quilts) by Pam and Nicky Lintott
- 1 Jelly Roll (40 total 2 1/2" strips)
- 1 Yard Border Fabric or more if you make it bigger
- 60 Degree Triangle or Diamond shaped ruler with at least 3-1/2" tall triangle or with half of the diamond at 3 1/2" (I prefer one without the corners chopped off, but whatever you have is ok)
- Neutral Sewing Thread (cream, white, beige or gray)
- Sewing Machine in good working order*
- Sewing Machine needles - size 70/10, 75/11 or 80/12 Microtex or Quilting
- Rotary cutter
Optional Materials
- Rotating Cutting Mat or small self healing cutting mat that's easy to move around.
- Backing and Binding fabric. Size may vary depending on if you make the quilt larger or make the backing from scraps, or neither! This isn't needed for class, but necessary for finishing the quilt
*If you need to borrow a sewing machine, we have a limited number available and they must be booked in advance. Book Here. It is always better to be learning on your own machine - it's the one you will be using at home!
